Google’s recently announced Pixel 9a smartphone has many excellent features and specs for a phone under $700 in Canada. However, Google had to make some cuts to make it affordable, such as having less memory, no telephoto camera, and using a different modem.
Google told Android Authority that the Pixel 9a uses the Exynos Modem 5300, similar to the Pixel 8 series. The Exynos Modem 5300 doesn’t allow for satellite connectivity, so the Pixel 9a doesn’t fit in with the rest of the Pixel 9 series, which uses the Exynos Modem 5400.
Satellite SOS only recently launched in Canada for the Pixel 9 series. The Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold all have this feature because of the 5400 modem, but now the Pixel 9a is left out of the fun.
Considering the Pixel 9a uses an Exynos Modem 5300, next year’s model, the expected Pixel 10a, may offer the 5400 modem and might have satellite connectivity. If you love hiking in places without cellular service, you might not want to buy the Pixel 9a.
The Pixel 9a also lacks certain Gemini features that require multimodality due to only having 8GB of RAM.
