

The lorry that contained illegally mined sand was intercepted on the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway(NH-44) in Tripattur on Tuesday.
A 32-year-old lorry driver was arrested by Kandali police for illegal sand mining from Palar river near Tirupattur town on Tuesday.
Police said the arrested person was identified as K. Lakshman, a native of Tirupattur. Initial inquiry revealed that based on the alert, a special police team led by sub-inspector S. Rugan of Kandali police was patrolling on Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH 44) near Tirupattur town when the team stopped the lorry that contained loads of sand. As he saw the police team, Lakshman tried to flee after abandoning the vehicle. However, the police team rounded him up.
The police team checked the lorry and found illegal sand. The team patrolling the area including an irrigation tank, open government land and riverbed after repeated complaints of illegal sand theft.
Following the incident, Tirupattur SP Sheya Gupta formed additional teams to intensify patrol in the district to prevent illegal sand mining from lakes and Palar river. A case has been registered. A probe is underway.
