Google brings NotebookLM AI podcast-maker to Gemini

Google has announced Gemini’s two latest features, Canvas, a new space for refining your documents and code, and Audio overviews, which turn documents, slides, and research reports into podcast-style conversations.

Canvas lets you work with Gemini to create, draft, edit and refine documents and code in a single space. Gemini will also provide feedback and code previews.

I see how Canvas can be very useful for coding. However, I worry Gemini’s feedback and comments could be a little annoying when writing, especially if it’s constantly telling me I’m doing things wrong. But I’ll need to try it to see.

The other feature, Audio overviews, can turn documents into podcasts. Two AI hosts will talk and speak from two different perspectives. You can listen to the podcasts on the web or mobile, and you can share and download them as well.

I can see this feature being quite useful, especially for students. Inserting a whole research paper, book report, or a chunk of your textbook into Audio overviews and listening to it as a podcast could be a helpful alternative studying method.

Google released a similar feature in its NotebookLM tool, which allowed people to turn content in the notebook into a podcast using generative AI. The NotebookLM variant garnered a lot of attention, so it’s hardly a surprise that the search giant is bringing it to Gemini and a wider audience.
