The Tiruchi City Corporation on Saturday initiated a cleaning drive at the Peacock Park near Uyyakondan canal in Zone V.
Over 60 volunteers, including students belonging to voluntary community service clubs in colleges and the general public, were engaged in the cleaning. Corporation workers and sanitation supervisors were deployed to assist them.
Around 40 kg of waste, mostly dry leaves and plastics, were removed from the park. The waste collected was segregated before being disposed. The cleaning exercise began around 7 a.m.
The initiative is aimed at promoting awareness among residents on keeping public places free from pollution. More parks are to be identified for the initiative. “Similar drives will be carried out every week in major parks by roping in educational institutions,” said a senior Corporation official.
According to sources, there are over 300 parks in all five zones of the city and the maintenance cost in each park was more than ₹2 lakh a year. However, many parks remain neglected for want of funds.
