Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Y.S. Sharmila on Saturday said there was no truth in the allegation made by the Centre that southern States were resorting to politics on the delimitation issue.

“It is a struggle for the rights of the people,” she asserted, in a post on X. She said if the seats were divided based on population, the southern States would suffer an irreparable loss. The dominance of the northern States would increase, and the importance of the southern States would diminish, she said.

Declaring A.P. Congress’s full support to the struggle of the southern States on delimitation, she said the silence of the Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan on the issue was tantamount to betrayal of the people of the State, as it was the neglect of their rights.

She said similarly silence of the YSR Congress Party chief Jagan Mohan Reddy on the issue would mean extending indirect support to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The A.P. Congress chief demanded that the TDP, the JSP and the YSR Congress Party rise above politics and come together to oppose delimitation.

She said under the current policy of the Central government, if the State of Uttar Pradesh alone gets an increase of 143 seats, the southern States of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana together would get only 144 seats. “Isn’t this discrimination?Isn’t this injustice to South India?,” she asked.
