Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar have announced plans to hold a grand Cauvery Aarti at the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) during Dasara, emphasising the cultural and ecological significance of the river. A dedicated committee has been formed to plan the event, which aims to blend tradition with a strong message on water conservation.
The announcement came during the city’s first-ever Cauvery Aarti at Sankey Tank on Friday, where thousands gathered for a unique ceremony featuring a floating stage, vibrant lighting, cultural performances, and vedic chants. Mr. Shivakumar, who earlier performed rituals at Talakaveri, poured the Cauvery water into the tank as a symbolic gesture of reverence.
Mr. Shivakumar said, “we are planning to hold Cauvery Arati at KRS during the Dasara event this year. I have formed a committee to come up with a plan to hold this mega event.”
The ceremony was a vibrant affair, featuring a grand procession, a traditional puja, an elaborate lighting display, a laser show, and a live orchestra. Popular artists, including Ananya Bhat and Raghu Dixit, captivated attendees with their performances.
Marking the occasion ahead of World Water Day (March 22), the event was organised by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), the Water Resources Department, and the Minor Irrigation Department. Participants took a mass pledge to conserve water, with the Deputy Chief Minister stressing the urgent need for sustainable water management in the face of drought conditions.
Highlighting the State’s efforts, Mr. Shivakumar noted that the Cauvery Phase 5 project is supplying water to 110 villages, ensuring the city’s drinking water needs are met. He urged citizens to adopt rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge practices, reinforcing the commitment to safeguarding water resources for future generations.
