Autorickshaw driver held for impersonation as police officer, robbery


The Jayanagar police have arrested an autorickshaw driver Asif, a resident of R.T. Nagar for allegedly posing as a police officer, targeting couples sitting in parks and cars by the roadside, threatening and robbing them.

On March 5, a couple who were sitting in a car by the roadside in Jayanagar became a target of Asif. He knocked on the window glass and when they responded, he allegedly threatened, and robbed them of valuables. The couple lodged a complaint with Jayanagar police later. Probing this case, based on technical evidence, police arrested Asif.

Lokesh B. Jagalasar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Division), Bengaluru, said the accused is said to have been involved in at least 19 similar cases. Police have recovered around 80 grams of gold ornaments from the accused. “If any couples have been targeted similarly, we request them to come forward and lodge a complaint or give information about the incident to the nearest police station,” he said.
