In order to address the travel woes of rail passengers on the Alappuzha coastal route, the Railway Board has decided to increase the number of coaches for MEMU trains.
In a statement issued here on Friday, K.C. Venugopal, MP, said the Railway Board had decided to allocate 16 MEMU rakes to the Thiruvananthapuram division.
Mr. Venugopal earlier highlighted the travel hardships faced by passengers on the Alappuzha coastal route, particularly the issue of crowding due to the insufficient number of coaches for MEMU trains, during discussions with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and other officials. “The Railways are planning to allocate 16 rakes for MEMU trains operating on the Alappuzha route,” he added.
With the newly allocated rakes, the number of coaches for MEMU trains on the Alappuzha- Ernakulam and Alappuzha-Kollam routes will increase from 12 to 16. It is expected to provide some relief to passengers.
