A man, who allegedly attacked police personnel in a bid to escape from police custody, was shot in the leg on Friday night.

According to police, the accused, Adarsh, was one of the three persons arrested by the police in connection with a dacoity case reported on the outskirts of Mysuru on January 20 this year. A group of masked men waylaid a car belonging to a Kerala-based businessman and drove it away after assaulting the occupants.

Later the same night, the car was found abandoned about ten kilometres away from Gujegowdanapura village on the Mysuru-Mananthavadi road. But the cash kept in the vehicle was missing. Superintendent of Police N. Vishnuvardhan formed special teams to trace the accused.

On March 21, a police team took three accused persons from Kerala – Adarsh, Vijesh, and Sreejith into custody.

When the accused Adarsh, alias Murugan, was taken to the crime scene on Friday night for a mahazar or inspection by the Mysuru rural division circle inspector Shivananjashetty, who is the investigating officer, along with the team comprising Bylakuppe Circle inspector Deepak, the accused sought to relieve himself near the village road in Gopalapura.

After the police allowed him to go, Adarsh picked up a broken beer bottle from a nearby place and attacked two police personnel, including a police sub-inspector and a police constable, in an attempt to escape.

The police said that Adarsh attacked the police personnel with the bottle intending to kill them and then attempted to escape.

Circle inspector Shivananjashetty immediately fired a warning shot in the air while Bylakuppe Circle inspector Deepak shot the fleeing accused in the leg with his pistol to prevent his escape. The injured police personnel as well as the accused were taken to K.R. Hospital.

Meanwhile, the police said a case had been registered against Adarsh at Jayapura police station. “Multiple cases have already been registered against him in the past,” the police said.
