Steam on Xbox teased in since-deleted Microsoft image

Steam could soon come to the Xbox ecosystem.

As part of this week’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2025, Microsoft published a blog post about its various partnerships to “make every screen in the world an Xbox.” In the post, Microsoft briefly featured an image showcasing a revamped Xbox UI that included none other than Steam, only to quietly remove it after The Verge reached out for comment.

Thankfully, The Verge nabbed a screenshot of the since-deleted image, which clearly shows tabs for Steam on various platforms in the Xbox ecosystem:

While this definitely looks like a mock-up instead of anything truly final, The Verge reports that Microsoft is indeed working on Steam integration in the Xbox app on PC. However, the publication notes this is in the “early stages” and could ultimately not see the light of day.

Should this happen, though, it would line up with Microsoft’s overall strategy of unifying console and PC. Earlier this year, the company said it has grand plans to bring together “the best of Xbox and Windows” into single devices, and this reportedly includes an Xbox-branded PC gaming handheld from Asus slated to release this year. The company has also confirmed it’s working on a proprietary Xbox handheld, which would, presumably, take some cues from Windows.

On top of all of that, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer told Polygon last year that third-party storefronts like the Epic Games Store and itch.IO could come to Xbox consoles.

In both that interview and others, Spencer has repeatedly stressed that the console market isn’t growing anymore, which has incentivized Microsoft to adopt a more platform-agnostic approach that includes greater PC integration and even Xbox game ports on PlayStation and Nintendo platforms.
