The Maharashtra government has initiated the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in its administrative processes, with Microsoft and the Gates Foundation set to support the state in becoming a national model for digital governance and the Right to Service. Microsoft co-founder and Gates Foundation representative Bill Gates recently met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the Sahyadri State Guest House in Mumbai.

During their meeting, Gates and Fadnavis discussed the integration of artificial intelligence in healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure development to drive efficiency and innovation.

The collaboration is expected to accelerate Maharashtra’s efforts in leveraging AI-driven solutions for governance, economic development, and public service delivery. The partnership also aligns with the state’s broader mission to enhance digital transformation and sustainable growth.

During the meeting, CM Fadnavis emphasized Maharashtra’s ongoing transformation, highlighting major projects in infrastructure, agriculture, and healthcare. He urged the Gates Foundation to collaborate in enhancing healthcare services in rural areas, where the shortage of doctors remains a critical challenge.

The Chief Minister noted that artificial intelligence (AI) is being integrated into healthcare and agriculture, with dedicated budgetary allocations for these sectors. He cited an example from Pune district, where AI-driven interventions have doubled sugarcane production.

Addressing energy needs, Fadnavis highlighted the state’s efforts to ensure uninterrupted electricity for farmers. Fadnavis also shared insights on Maharashtra’s ambitious Innovation City, a 300-acre hub in Navi Mumbai dedicated to fostering technology-driven advancements. In response, Bill Gates assured financial and technical assistance for this initiative, reinforcing Microsoft and the Gates Foundation’s commitment to Maharashtra’s digital transformation.

A key focus of the discussion was women’s empowerment and self-employment. Fadnavis reiterated his government’s goal of creating 25 lakh Lakhpati Didis, enabling women to achieve financial independence. He also highlighted the Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana, under which the state government provides ₹1,500 per month to underprivileged women.
