Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai Branch Office, conducted search and seizure operations at warehouses of e-commerce platforms Amazon and Flipkart in Tiruvallur district on Wednesday (March 19, 2025) night, as part of nationwide enforcement action this week.

It was found that some products were stored and sold without the ISI mark, though they were covered under the BIS mandatory certification.

Two teams of officials conducted the raids at different locations, based on information about alleged violations, and seized non-certified products, said a press release.

In the raid conducted on the premises of Amazon Seller Services Private Limited, Durainallur village, Tiruvallur, the team seized 3,376 products without the standard mark worth ₹36 lakh.

The team collected evidence of violation of various quality control orders related to insulated flasks, insulated food containers, metallic potable water bottles, ceiling fans, and toys.

According to BIS Act 2016, the products cannot be sold or stored without the BIS standard mark.

Similarly, another raid was conducted on the premises of Flipkart India Private Limited, Veppampattu Road, Koduvalli, in Tiruvallur district, wherein 286 packs of baby diapers, 26 stainless steel water bottles, 10 insulated steel bottles, and 108 casseroles were seized.

Officials of the BIS said the raids were aimed at curbing sales of substandard and uncertified products through online platforms. G. Bhavani, head, BIS, Chennai Branch, said they would continue such enforcement actions against the sale of non-compliant products on other e-commerce platforms as well.

Sale of products without the ISI mark was a violation of the BIS Act, and would lead to prosecution and a minimum fine of ₹2 lakh or up to two years of imprisonment, she said.

Earlier this week, similar raids were conducted across the country, including Lucknow and Delhi.
