Telangana’s allocation to Education sector dept is 7.9% of total budget 2025-26

The Telangana Budget for 2025-26 gives a boost to the education sector with a year-on-year increase in allocation by 13.5%. However, this is much lower than what the educationists have been demanding. The Education Department outlay has been pegged at ₹24,174 crore which is 7.9% of the total ₹3,04,965 crore budget for 2025-26.

In his 11,997 word speech on the floor of Assembly on March 19, 2025, Finance Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu mentioned education 36 times.

Laying out the plans for the education department which Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu called “a guiding light for the secure future of children from the poor and disadvantaged classes”, he made the outlay that is 13.5% increase in allocation from ₹21,292 crores in the 2024-25 budget.

The outlay for education has not matched the growth of overall budget outlay over the past decade. In 2014-15, the State’s outlay was ₹10,200.33 crores out of the ₹1,00,637.96 crore budget. While the overall budget has grown by 203% the education outlay has grown only by 126%.

The Finance Minister proposed the outlay while recognising the fact: “While the global education system has undergone significant transformation, our government schools continue to lag behind by decades.”

662 schools do not have their own buildings

“Currently, there are 1,023 government residential schools in Telangana, out of which 662 schools do not have their own buildings. Many gurukuls are operating in buildings with minimal facilities, lacking proper toilet amenities, and housing hundreds of students,” said Mr. Vikaramarka.
