The Alappuzha municipality has declared the stretch from Mullakkal Zero Junction to District Court Bridge (Mullakkal Street) as a Green Town. The declaration was made as part of the Malinya Muktham Navakeralam campaign, aimed at promoting cleanliness and sustainable waste management.
Officials said that all commercial establishments along the stretch had installed separate bins for segregated waste collection. “Establishments have initiated various measures to ensure cleanliness in their surroundings and public spaces, leading to the declaration of a Green Town,” said an official.
As part of the declaration, lamps were lit on both sides of the road from Mullakkal Zero Junction to District Court Bridge on Tuesday evening, with support from trade and business establishments.
Campaign for traders
In the lead-up to the declaration, the Alappuzha municipality conducted a campaign focusing on educating traders about scientific waste management and the significance of the initiative. Shops and establishments have also been urged to promote the use of eco-friendly products. Officials said that the health wing of the civic body would conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance.
As part of the initiative, all traders and street vendors operating in the area took a cleanliness pledge. It was administered by Alappuzha municipal chairperson K.K. Jayamma. Health Standing Committee chairperson A.S. Kavitha, Development Standing Committee chairperson M.G. Sathidevi, Public Works Standing Committee chairperson M.R.
