No one hurt after Toronto tow yard targeted in shooting

There has been another tow truck industry-related shooting in Toronto.

Police said the latest incident occurred at about 1:08 a.m. on Tuesday morning at a tow yard in the Sheppard Ave. W.-Chesswood Dr. area.

There were no reports of injuries, but cops found evidence of gunfire.

That follows four gunfire incidents involving the towing industry within a week earlier this month, plus the fatal shooting of a woman and a dog during a home invasion in Markham, where the occupants were said to be involved in the tow-truck business. Police said the residence had been shot at five times previously dating to 2018.

Despite that, Toronto Police deputy chief Rob Johnson insisted on Friday that “by and large that industry (towing) is very safe” and police are “pro-actively engaged in the enforcement of that industry.”

Johnson said that so far this year, “the number of shootings and firearm discharges (related to the tow-truck industry) are 29% of our overall number.”

In January, Toronto Police launched Project Dodger, an initiative aimed at addressing the rise in criminality and violence linked to the tow-truck industry.

In 2024, 63 firearm discharges and shooting incidents were linked to tow truck-related disputes, accounting for almost 13% of all shootings in Toronto.
