GoPro has been a byword for action cameras since it was founded in 2002. Since then it’s gone from making “re-usable wrist cameras” (as it called its first Hero camera) to building rugged social media workhorses such as its Hero Black range.
Smartphones may now be incredibly capable video cameras, but GoPros remain indispensable for anyone who needs a near-indestructible stunt double for their iPhone or Android phone. GoPro has even started dabbling in cameras for FPV (first-person view) drones with its first Bones model.
Despite dabbling in more niche models (and infamously making its own drone back in 2016 with the ill-fated Karma), GoPro’s core remains its Hero Black series – and they’re still among the best action cameras. Some of the best cheap action cameras from the likes of DJI and Akaso may beat them on price, but GoPros still offer a degree of user-friendliness, quality and flexibility that is difficult to find elsewhere.
